Srinagar, Apr 12 (KNO): Following the tragic accident in Handwara that claimed the lives of two young students, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced an ex-gratia relief package for the victims and their families. Expressing profound grief over the loss, Omar, as reported by the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), said, "No amount can ever fill the void left by the tragic loss of young lives in the Handwara accident. We stand with the families in this hour of deep sorrow". The chief minister announced that Rs 1 lakh will be provided to the families of the deceased, Rs 50,000 for those injured and Rs 25,000 for those who sustained minor injuries. Meanwhile, speaking with the reporters, Nasir Aslam Wani, Advisor to CM, said the tragedy was a personal loss as the victims were from his neighbourhood. “Kupwara has been left behind in the health sector, and we are working to change that,” he said, stressing that efforts are underway to ensure patients don’t have to be transferred to Srinagar for specialised care. Wani assured that the health infrastructure in the region will be overhauled comprehensively. “Our aim is to build such facilities locally that no one needs to be shifted out for treatment,” he added. Responding to queries on road infrastructure, the CM's Advisor said the government is actively working on four-laning projects, including Kulangam and the Sopore-Kulangam stretch. Wani confirmed that a magisterial inquiry has been ordered to probe the circumstances surrounding the accident. “Preliminary findings will be shared in due course,” he said—(KNO)
